Senate Confirms Ed Chen

Edward M. Chen will become the first Asian-American to serve as a federal judge on the San Francisco-based federal trial court. The U.S. Senate confirmed Chen by a 56-42 vote after repeated delays and three nominations by President Obama.  Federal judicial appointments are for life.

Chen has served as a magistrate-judge since 2001.  Prior to that, he was a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, Northern California chapter.  He served between 1985-2001.  He practiced law at Coblentz, Cahen, McCabe & Breyer from 1982-1985.

He received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law in 1979.  He served as law clerk to former District Judges Charles B. Renfrew and 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge James R. Browning.
