First South Asian Nominee to Northern District

[UPDATED] A San Francisco deputy city attorney whose name looks like a printer’s typo, has been nominated to fill the set of U.S. District Judge Susan Illston.  If confirmed, Vince Chhabria would be the first judge of South Asian ancestry on the district’s bench.

Chhabria, 43, worked on some of San Francisco’s most controversial legal cases, including defense of the city law requiring most employers to provide health insurance for their workers and he supervised the work on the appeals of same-sex marriage cases.

He is a past clerk for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, serving in 2001 and earlier completed clerkships with the late 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge James R. Browning and on the Northern District in San Francisco for Judge Charles Breyer, from 1998-99.

Chhabria handles government litigation and is co-chief of the appellate litigation section of the city attorney’s office.  He’s held that post since 2005.

Prior to joining the city attorney’s office, Chhabria worked at the law firms of, Keker & Van Nest and Covington & Burling.

He received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law in 1998 and an undergraduate degree from UC Santa Cruz in 1991.

(We should note that Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal is also South Asian and was appointed to the Northern District in 2010.  Magistrates are appointed to eight-year terms by the judges of the court and are not Article III, life-tenure judges confirmed by the U.S. Senate.  If confirmed, Chhabria would be the first South Asian Article III judge on the court.)

He was one of six nominees by President Obama on Thursday, including four nominees to the Eastern District of Michigan and one nominee for the Arkansas Eastern District court.

The other nominees include:

Matthew F. Leitman, of Michigan, to the U.S. District court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Judith E. Levy, of Michigan, to U.S. District court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Laurie J. Michelson, of Michigan, to U.S. District court  for the Eastern District of Michigan.

James M. Moody Jr., of Arkansas, to U.S. District court  for the Eastern District of Arkansas.

Linda V. Parker, of Michigan, to U.S. District court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
