The Commission on Judicial Appointments confirmed three nominees to the state appeals court Wednesday, including Bruce Smith, the first African-American judge to serve on the Fresno-based Fifth District Court of Appeals.
The three-member commission confirmed Jon Streeter, a San Francisco trial lawyer with Keker & Van Nest and former San Francisco Bar president, and Marla Miller, a superior court judge and former federal prosecutor.
Smith, 58, has served as a Fresno County superior court judge since 2000 and was appointed by former Gov. Gray Davis. Prior to joining the bench he was a partner at Stammer, McKnight, Barnum and Bailey and served as a deputy district attorney in Fresno County.
Streeter and Miller were named to the First District Court of Appeal, based in San Francisco.
Streeter, 58, was the former State Bar president from 2011-2012, has served on the ACLU board of directors, as well as president of the San Francisco Bar Association and a president of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers in Northern California.
Streeter works on complex business litigation, including patent, intellectual property litigation, antitrust, securities and civil rights law.
He was part of a Keker team that represented the Oakland Coliseum authority in disputes with the Golden State Warriors that ultimately resulted in the coliseum commission collecting $32 million.
Miller, 59, has served as a state court judge in San Francisco since 2005. She has also worked as the chief assistant district attorney for the San Francisco District Attorney in 1996 and as a federal prosecutor in San Francisco from 1987-1992.
Miller was a partner at Morrison & Foerster from 1997 to 2005 and at Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin from 1992 to 1996.
